Historic 4-star coaching inn with AA Rosette dining in Stilton village

Historic Setting & Location

The Bell Inn is a coaching house with documented history dating back to the 1500s, located in the village of Stilton on the Great North Road. The village is known as the birthplace of Stilton cheese, and the hotel maintains a cheese counter selling local Stilton. The hotel sits just off the A1, 15 minutes from Peterborough and 45 minutes from Cambridge by car.

Dining & Culinary Experience

The Galleried Restaurant holds an AA Rosette award and offers seasonal menus with locally sourced cuisine, including a vegan-friendly selection. Guests can eat in The Bistro or The Village Bar, which both provide traditional British and international dishes from the same kitchen. The breakfast is served in a first-floor dining room featuring a large fireplace, and the hotel offers a range of local ales and an extensive wine list at the on-site bar.

Accommodations & Room Types

Deluxe double bedrooms include 4-poster beds with spacious living areas, while accessible double rooms on the ground floor meet specific mobility requirements. All rooms are individually furnished and include walk-in power showers, bathrobes, and a Roberts radio that welcomes guests with classical music. Dog-friendly rooms provide direct access to a grassed area for pet exercise.

Pet-Friendly & Family Offerings

Dogs are allowed in various hotel areas, including designated rooms and the bar area during breakfast service, with pet bowls provided. Families with children can book ground-floor rooms with outdoor seating, and the hotel offers family-friendly Sunday roasts along with a children's menu. The property has a courtyard and garden with outdoor furniture and a picnic area.

Amenities & On-Site Services

The hotel has free parking with two electric vehicle charging points on site, plus a 24-hour front desk and luggage storage. The building includes a designated smoking area, CCTV in common areas and outside property, and facilities for disabled guests. Meeting and banquet facilities are available for weddings, private events, and festive celebrations.

Review summary
Based on recent reviews
Powered by AI
Guests consistently praise the well-decorated and comfortable rooms at The Bell Inn, many of which are garden rooms providing easy access to green spaces, ideal for guests with dogs, and some have noted that the rooms are dog-friendly but don't smell of pets, instead smelling like a spa. Breakfast is a highlight, often described as incredible and plentiful, sometimes offering a freshly cooked experience instead of a buffet. While some have mentioned experiencing minor issues such as items missing from their plate at breakfast, the hotel's proximity to the Nene Park nature reserve, combined with amenities like EV charging points and coffee machines in the rooms, makes it a convenient and enjoyable stay, easily accessible from the A1M.

Wonderful Historic Stay

convenient parking helpful staff delicious dishes
I appreciated the convenient car parking available behind the building. Front of house staff were helpful. Nothing seemed too much trouble. Chefs made delicious dishes cooked to order, and table service was both timely and professional.
I noticed a lack of soundproofing between rooms. Noise from neighboring guests occasionally disturbed the otherwise peaceful atmosphere.

a decent stay

attentive staff great service noisy courtyard faulty shower
i found the staff in the bar quite attentive. the manager was also very helpful upon my arrival. she even found me a place to sit while checking if my room was ready. i thought this was a great service.
The room i stayed in overlooked the courtyard. I was often disturbed during the night. guests were sitting outside chatting loudly. it made it difficult to sleep well before a day of meetings. also, the shower sprayed water more from the back than the front, causing water to pool on the floor.

freshly cooked breakfast coffee bags excellent furnishings awful sleep wet floor inconsistent temperature
The breakfast was great. I especially liked that the brekkie was freshly cooked, not the usual buffet. I also appreciated the coffee bags in the room. I prefer a kettle and good quality coffee bag. The room and furnishings were excellent.
My awful night's sleep was not what I needed. The shower had more water coming out of the back than from the front. This made the floor very wet. It was difficult to get a consistent temperature of water in the shower. It was either too cold or too hot.

the staff at the bar were great. the manager on duty when i arrived on january 25, 2025, was helpful (found me a seat while my room was prepared). the room was large and warm, so i adjusted the radiator. i appreciated the heated bathroom floor and easy access to the dog-friendly garden rooms.
connecting to the wifi took some time. i think this was because of the distance from the router. i used the wifi to see family.
